Haft Sin
Haft Sin was a project in response to “how do you define home?” And being from Iran, nothing can sum up “home” more than Nowruz, the Persian new year which marks the first day of spring, and the inseparable tradition of setting the “Haft Seen” table which is a fixed set of seven (haft) symbolic items initiating with the letter “seen” or “s” in Persian alphabet.
This piece consists of seven handmade bowls containing the seven items of Haft Seen, hanging from seven nooses, with an audio describing what each item symbolizes, and a projector projecting news pieces from Iran, which creates a juxtaposition between the audio and the visual content.
The title, Haft Sin, also carries a semi-double entendre, with “Haft” meaning seven, and the word “Seen”(Persian letter for s) replaced with “sin”, reminding us of the Seven Deadly Sins.
This Project was done as part of my coursework at Goldsmiths, University of London.
